箱体式的PLC还有I/O扩展箱体，它不含CPU，仅有电源及I/O单元的功能。扩展箱体也依I/O点数的多少划分有不同的规格。
除上述模块，PLC还有特殊的或称智能或称功能模块。如A/D（模入）模块、D/A（模出）模块、高速计数模块、位控模块、温度模块等等。这些模块有自己的CPU，可对信号作预处理或后处理，以简化PLC的CPU对复杂的程控制量的控制。智能模块的种类、特性也大不相同，性能好的PLC，这些模块种类多，性能也好。
