工业生产过程可分为两种类型；连续型生产过程（如化学工业）及非连续型，即离散型生产过程（如机械制造业）。前者生产对象是连续的，分不出件的；后者为离散的，一件件的。由于PLC有上述几个方面的应用，而且，控制的规模又可大、可小，所以，这两种类型的生产过程都有其用武之地。
